History

The first cantilever chair was designed by Mart Stam in 1926. It was famous for having no back legs and is a very important example of 20th century design.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer also created cantilever chair in the Bauhaus.

The Finnish designer Alvar Aalto designed cantilever chairs, which were made out of wood.

Stam, Mart

Stam, Mart Mart Stam (1899-1986) was a dutch architect and designer.

His style is classified as "New Objectivity", an art movement that emerged in the 1920s in Germany and is considered a counter-movement of Expressionism.

In 1926 he invented and designed the first cantilever chair. Stam returned to the Netherlands in 1934 and in 1939 he became the director of the Institute for Arts Education in Amsterdam.
