History

The cantilever is an icon of furniture design.

In 1926 Mart Stam developed the first chair without back legs, the so-called cantilever chair, which, however, still based on a very rigid tubular construction.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe presented his cantilever chair, the MR20, which he designed for the Weißenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart in 1927. This chair provided a much higher elasticity.

Marcel Breuer also designed some versions of the cantilever chair during his time at the Bauhaus.
