History:

Charles and Ray Eames designed "La Chaise" in 1948 for a competition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and were greatly inspired by the sculpture "Floating Figure" by sculptor Gaston Lachaise.

It is still shown in the furniture design department. And also in other museums, such as the Gemeentemuseum in Den Haag, The Netherlands.

The seat shell made of fiberglass, has a round opening in the middle and overlaid on five chromed steel wire legs, which end in an oak-cross. The prototype of Charles and Ray Eames was made of hard rubber and not fiberglass.

Eames, Charles

Eames, Charles Charles Eames (1907 - 1978) was a designer and architect of U.S. origin.

Together with his wife Ray Eames, he significantly influenced the American post-war design and is particularly known for his furniture designs. These include the office and conference chairs (EA 117, 119, 219, 108, 208) coming from the Aluminium Group, stool (EA 125, EA 225) and lounge chairs (EA 124, EA 224).
