Harry Bertoia (1915 - 1978) was a native Italian artist, sound and furniture designer. He developed the Diamond Chair (Diamante chair).

At the age of 15 he decided to visit his big brother in Detroit and start a drawing career. In 1937 he received a scholarship to the Cranbrook University of the Arts, where he met Walter Gropius and Ray and Charles Eames the first time.

1950, Bertoia was settled in Pennsylvania in order to establish his own studio. Particularly close cooperation he used with Hans and Florence Knoll. During this time he developed his most famous work, the so-called Bertoia Collection, including the Diamante chair.

The Diamante chair is famous for its sculptural form and its molded lattice work of welded steel. This style is typical of Bertoia, who was particularly fond of the manual labor in his works.

Bertoia died in 1978 at age 63 from lung cancer.
