Marcel Breuer was a German-American architect and designer of Jewish origin.
His best known works are the steel chair B3 'Wassily', the cantilever chairs B32 and B64 "Cesca" and the coffee table "Wassily".
He trained as a carpenter at the Bauhaus in Weimar and then worked in the office of Walter Gropius for several years before starting his own office. Breuer was admitted to the Association of German Architects in 1931.
Because of his Jewish origins, he left the Third Reich in 1933 and managed to imigrate through Hungary and London to the United States. Along with Walter Gropius, he estabelished architectual faculty at the famed Harvard University.
As an architect he finalized large construction projects, such as the design and construction of the Flain resort in the French Alps (1960), and the UNESCO building in Paris.
Especially his early works were characterized by realistic and industrial design.
Marcel Breuer died in New York at the age of 79 years.
